In Honor of Red Ribbon Week...

We have been participating in Red Ribbon Week at school all week. There have been various activities for the students to participate in during their lunch and throughout the week. Today the students were encouraged to sign a school-wide pledge to be drug free. In grades K-2, we were having a coloring contest. Here are a few of our students with some very colorful posters for the contest.

Tomorrow (Friday) the students will be invited to "Twist Drugs Away" while doing the twist to music during their lunch and enjoying twisty pretzels. Should be fun!!!

Tomorrow is also a costume dress-up day! I hope to see everyone in their costumes! I hope that I recognize you! After our morning assembly with the Mad Scientist, all of the Kindergarten and 1st grade classes will be having a parade around the school in our costumes! Pop back in tomorrow for pictures! And if you are looking for me tomorrow... look for this instead!

Witches, the happy, waving ones...

I really enjoy doing directed drawing lessons with first graders because it helps them feel successful in art, where otherwise they might not have even attempted the drawing at all. We recently did a directed drawing lesson of a witch for Halloween. She was a cute, smiling, waving witch! They are now decorating our classroom walls in the spirit of October. Enjoy a few pictures!

And finally, a class of artists all on display:

Check back again soon for our class book we will be making this week!

Hello???

We call these our "Fluency Phones"!!! This was our first lesson with them! They were made out of PVC pipe (thanks to my husband, Mr. Guerrettaz). Their purpose is to allow the students an opportunity to read to themselves in a quiet voice and hear themselves loud and clear on the other end of the phone. Even when speaking in a whisper, they can hear themselves very clearly. They were very FUN for us to read with and keeps the practice of reading in the decodable books both exciting and highly motivating. I'm not sure if the class had more fun reading with the phones, or "hanging" them up when it was time for instruction. As their teacher, I'm wondering if they noticed that we read the book 3 times??? :)

Thanks for visiting! Come back to visit again soon!

Thank you for visiting our classroom blog! I am super excited to get this up and running! We are a class of 27 first graders in Fallbrook, CA who are working very hard at mastering the state standards and trying to have fun while we do it! I cannot wait to share this blog with the class and their families. We have been so busy this year and I already have so much to share with you all! Please come back and visit often so you can see what we are working on in 1st grade!
